Do you need Silver Cord hours? Meeker and Mitchell need you for their Spring Carnivals. Come help with fun games and activities, or work behind the scenes in the concession stand. There are many different time slots options available from 3-6pm for each carnival.

The American Lung Association in Iowa is looking for event volunteers to help with the 2024 Fight for Air Climb on Sunday, April 7th from 6:30 am – 1:30 pm. This is a great opportunity for students seeking to fulfill their Silver Cord hours while making a positive impact in the community. See your emailed Daily Storm watch for sign-up information.
The 2024 Fight For Air Climb is the American Lung Associations main fundraising event in Iowa. Participants climb the stairs of four prominent buildings in downtown Des Moines to raise funds and awareness for lung disease and lung health.
We anticipate having 800 participants at this year’s event and we need the help of volunteers to make it happen! Some of the areas where volunteers are needed on event day are: Greeters, Gear check, Registration, Start & Finish lines, Motivators, and Finish Line Celebrators
The tentative schedule is:
6:15 – 6:30 AM – Arrive and check in at the Wellmark YMCA, 501 Grand Ave., Des Moines. We will hand out t-shirts and assign volunteer positions at this time.
6:45 AM – Volunteer briefing at the Wellmark YMCA.
7:00 AM –Individuals will be escorted to their volunteer position.
1:00 PM – 1:30 PM – Event concludes and volunteers are released to go home based on their assigned area.
Parking is available in the city garage on 5th Ave and Keo Way (enter on 5th Ave). Street parking is also available. Volunteers may enter through Wellmark YMCA on the skywalk or street level.

We anticipate having 800 participants at this year’s event and we need the help of volunteers to make it happen! Some of the areas where volunteers are needed on event day are: Greeters, Gear check, Registration, Start & Finish lines, Motivators, and Finish Line Celebrators
The tentative schedule is:

A typical whole-blood donation is 1 pint, while the average adult has about 10 pints of blood. Donate to STUCO’s blood drive on March 22nd. Join the Student Council in supporting hospitals across Iowa by donating at this year’s blood drive. In partnership with LifeServe, the event will be held during the school day on March 22nd. Please note donors must be at least 16 years old. To register to donate or learn more about donating, use the posted QR code.
The Lost and Found collection will be donated over Spring Break. If you are missing some things, please come by the Main Office and check the items we have found. There are sweatshirts, jackets, water bottles, shoes, and many other items that may belong to you.

· Accepting any original works (no AI-generated pieces): Fiction fewer than 1000 words (unless an excerpt with a QR code), Poetry, Photography, Art (digital, ceramic, 3D, sketches, painting, etc.)
· To submit: email a Google Doc/JPEG with your creative work titled (how you want it printed in this year’s publication) to ahsscratchpad@ames.k12.ia.us. In your email, indicate how you want to be published (your name, pen name, or anonymous).

This past weekend, some AHS Art Students celebrated their Scholastic Art Awards at a ceremony in Iowa City. Congrats to our current AHS Art Student winners from the Scholastic Art Contest. Grace Helmers won an award (a Silver Key and a Honorable Mention) for her photos, The Love Stitch and A Lonely Café. Erin Cho won awards (two Honorable Mentions and a Silver Key) for her painting Untitled, her Mixed Media Bonded By Brokenness and her Digital Art Adagio. Patrick Johnson won a Silver Key for his photograph, In the Shadow of the Capital. Keira Kreider won a Silver Key for her Memory Project. Juniper Marshall won a Gold Key for her Digital Art- Cooking at Sunset, Maisara Nafeesa won a Silver Key for her Cup of Sea. Heidi Niesen won an Honorable Mention for her animation, The Barber and the Thief.

This will be the last FREE opportunity for seniors to be trained. If they miss their assigned session, they will need to pay for their own training through the American Heart Association or the Red Cross. Training must be completed by May 10th.

A Jostens representative will be delivering graduation announcements, jewelry, apparel, and any other items that you ordered tomorrow in the Commons from 11:00 – 1:00. The cap and gowns are NOT distributed at this time. Caps & Gowns will arrive in May.
The Ames FFA Chapter participated in the North Central District Convention on Saturday, March 2nd. Ada Nelson competed in Ag Broadcasting and received a silver rating. Conduct of Meeting team consisted of Julia Mortvedt, Jenna Thomas, Avery Wirth, Mya Geffre, Lily Angus, Cassie Kopaska, and Journey Wolfe, and they received a silver rating. Autumn Wild competed in Job Interview and received a gold rating and alternate to state. Our FFA chapter received a Superior Rating for the National Chapter Award. Autumn Wild and Josie Mowrer also received Academic Achievement Awards. Finally, Ada Nelson was elected to North Central District Sentinel! She is the first member from the Ames FFA Chapter to be elected to district office! Congratulations to all participants and to Ada on her new officer position!

Seniors: There are approximately 80 of you who still need to be trained in CPR in order to graduate. Seniors with last names that begin with A – J, will report to the turf gym no later than 8:30 am on Tuesday morning, March 26th. Seniors with last names that begin with K – Z, will report to the turf gym on Wednesday morning, March 27th, no later than 8:30 am. Seniors must have their student ID’s to check in.
This will be the last FREE opportunity for seniors to be trained. If they miss their assigned session, they will need to pay for their own training through the American Heart Association or the Red Cross. Training must be completed by May 10th.
The American Lung Association in Iowa is looking for event volunteers to help with the 2024 Fight for Air Climb on Sunday, April 7th from 6:30 am – 1:30 pm. This is a great opportunity for students seeking to fulfill their Silver Cord hours while making a positive impact in the community.
The 2024 Fight For Air Climb is the American Lung Association’s main fundraising event in Iowa. Participants climb the stairs of four prominent buildings in downtown Des Moines to raise funds and awareness for lung disease and lung health.
We anticipate having 800 participants at this year’s event and we need the help of volunteers to make it happen! Some of the areas where volunteers are needed on event day are:
· Greeters
· Gear check
· Registration
· Start line and finish lines at each building
· Stairwell Cheerleaders and Motivators
· Finish line celebration
The tentative schedule is:
6:15 – 6:30 AM – Arrive and check in at the Wellmark YMCA, 501 Grand Ave., Des Moines. We will hand out t-shirts and assign volunteer positions at this time.
6:45 AM – Volunteer briefing at the Wellmark YMCA.
7:00 AM –Individuals will be escorted to their volunteer position.
1:00 PM – 1:30 PM – The event concludes and volunteers are released to go home based on their assigned area.
Parking is available in the city garage on 5th Ave and Keo Way (enter on 5th Ave). Street parking is also available. Volunteers may enter through Wellmark YMCA on the skywalk or street level.

Senior Picture Deadline Extension: Due to low numbers we are extending the deadline to 11:59 pm on Feb. 25th. Please email your selected senior picture to yearbook@ames.k12.ia.us. If we do not receive a picture by that time we will publish those students’ junior year class photos instead so we can have as many seniors pictured as possible. We require the picture to be a vertical, high-resolution JPG (file size of at least 400 KB). We prefer that the picture be a color, head, and shoulder shot with no props. We are seeking interested high-school students to come to the ISU campus to participate in an international particle physics masterclass on March 5! Students will become “scientists for a day,” learn about the fundamental particles that make up all matter in the universe, and perform hands-on activities with real data collected at a world-leading experiment (Belle II). At the end of the day, they will join a video conference with groups joining similar masterclasses around the US and beyond! No background in physics is required. Come join us for a day of exploration and fun!

The Ames FFA Chapter participated in their sub-district competition yesterday with great success! Autumn Wild competed in Job Interview where she received a gold rating and 1st place. Ada Nelson competed in Ag Broadcasting where she received a gold rating and 1st place. Jenna Thomas, Julia Mortvedt, Avery Wirth, Sophie Fox, Cassie Kopaska, Mya Geffre, and Lily Angus competed in Conduct of Meetings where they received a gold rating and 2nd place. All participants will be advancing to the District competition on March 2nd. Congratulations!

We are seeking interested high-school students to come to the ISU campus to participate in an international particle physics masterclass on March 5! Students will become “scientists for a day,” learn about the fundamental particles that make up all matter in the universe, and perform hands-on activities with real data collected at a world-leading experiment (Belle II). At the end of the day, they will join a video conference with groups joining similar masterclasses around the US and beyond! No background in physics is required. Come join us for a day of exploration and fun!

Reading Buddies
Reading Buddies provides free literacy sessions for children who are in first, second, and third grades. Volunteers will meet with students for personalized reading sessions to help each child with their literacy skills. These 45-minute sessions are held twice a week in the afternoon and supervised by RRSC team leads.

Get ready for an enchanting night of theatrical brilliance! Ames High Drama is hosting its Winter One-Acts Festival presenting three captivating shows: The Layover by Tracy Wells, The 146 Point Flame by Matt Thompson, and Back Cover by Emily Hageman. Set in an average airport terminal, the historic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, and bustling New York City, these three shows explore themes of loss, love, and change. Please note that this festival is recommended for mature audiences. Tickets can be purchased online at ahsfinearts.ludus.com or at the door. Student admission is $5 and adult admission is $10. Seating is general admission. Join us on February 2nd and 3rd at 7 pm, and on February 4 at 2 pm, in the Wayne “Hank” Hansen Performing Arts Center at Ames High School.

Only current Sophomores and Juniors who have a GPA of 3.4 or higher are qualified. It is a high honor to be accepted to be a part of this national organization, and you are encouraged to apply if you meet the requirements! On Friday, all students are welcome to pick up a bag of popcorn in the concession stand during their lunch time. This is to celebrate National Popcorn Day. The popcorn is provided by Ames Schools.
The F=MA is a physics contest organized by the Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). The F=ma exam consists of 25 multiple-choice questions related to classical mechanics, and tests skills on how to apply fundamental principles to real-world scenarios. The test will be given on February 8, after school. If interested, please email Dr. May, by TOMORROW.

Students: Please enter the building through the Main Entry, under the big awning in the front of the building. You can buzz the office at the other doors, but the office staff will not unlock the door for you. Save yourself time, and save the office staff from the interruptions. Park in the Student Parking lot on the East side of the building, and enter through the doors under the awning.
