In Debate News: At the Johnston Dragon Invitational Debate Tournament on Saturday, Sohomore Le Wang and Senior Akshay Sarda both advanced to the Final Session of Student Congressional Debate. Freshmen Liza Mendelev and Anneka Singh advanced to the semi-finals of Novice Public Forum Debate. Great job on their first tournament!
Auditions for the Winter One-Act plays are being held after school TONIGHT from 4pm-6pm in Mrs. Kaufman’s room (Rm 1690). There are three shows to audition for. Ames High’s Got Talent! Please share your talents with the student body, whether it is singing, playing an instrument, a comedy routine, dancing, magic, spoken word, or something else that is amazing! The next Coffeehouse will be Thursday, December 14th during a special period during the day in the auditorium. Sign up on Ms. DiBlasi’s door on or before December 11th. The US National Chemistry Olympiad program is a multi-tiered chemistry competition for high school students. The US National Chemistry Olympiad local exam will be administered in March and the National Exam will be in April. If you are interested in participating, email Dr. Bonnie May before Thanksgiving.

Join us for a discussion of the scholarship process – everything from where to look for scholarships, standard application expectations, how to write essays, and how to improve your applications. We’ll share examples and resources, and walk you through the scholarship timeline from start to finish.

Stop by the pool and give Boys Swimming a try!! Are you looking for a fun sport to try for the winter? Did you not make the cut on another team. Are you not sure if you would like it and just want to try it? Do you want to be in the best cardio shape you can be in for soccer season or track season? It is not too late to try Boys Swimming! Swim practices are 3:50 to 5:50 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you are interested in giving it a try, just stop down to the pool any day after school to talk to the coaches or just to give it a try. All experience levels are welcome! If you have questions, reach out to Head Coach Joe Fisher at joe.fisher@ames.k12.ia.us.

For the audition, you will sing a short excerpt and read a monologue that is one minute or less. Questions? Visit with Mr. Strong or Mrs. Kaufman. It’s going to be a great show!

One of the benefits of AHS is being able to take college credit courses through DMACC and receive high school credit at the same time. If you are interested in taking DMACC classes (online or on the DMACC campus) in Spring 2024, DMACC is taking registrations. Please contact your AHS counselor or DMACC advisor if you have any questions about class choices.

CONGRATULATIONS to the Varsity Cheer Squad for their performances at the State Competition this past weekend. Ames was the STATE RUNNER-UP in TWO divisions: 4A Cheer/Dance & Coed Stunt! This is our highest team placement in Cheer/Dance since 2015, and this was Ames’ first time in school history to compete in Coed Stunt! We also competed in a very competitive 4A All-Girl Stunt division and brought home 6th place!

There will be a Boys’ Basketball player meeting for all participants in all grades 9-12 on Wednesday, November 8th. This meeting will be held in the team meeting room #1711 across from the weight room.
If you are in need of some basketball gear, the girls’ basketball team store has a lot of basketball gear and not just for a specific team. The DECA club is holding a food drive through November 17th. They are collecting boxed and canned goods to donate to the Bethesda Community Food Pantry the week of Thanksgiving. You can find boxes in all the English teacher’s classrooms, along with Mrs. Schieffer’s room. Thank you for your donations!

The Ames High Art Club is hosting a hand turkey contest! Email a photo of your best hand turkey to ahsnahs-artclub@ames.k12.ia.us by this Friday, November 10th to enter. There will be prizes for the biggest turkey, smallest turkey, most unique turkey, a people’s choice turkey, and turkey with the best craftsmanship.
