Welcome to Eric Sundermeyer
The Ames Community School District is excited to announce Eric Sundermeyer as the new Interim Director of Student Services. Sundermeyer’s professional journey includes serving as superintendent at Interstate 35 School District, associate superintendent and chief human resources officer at Ottumwa School District, and director of curriculum, instruction, and assessment at Perry School District and West Liberty School District. He has extensive district-level experience, combined with a systems-thinking approach, and knowledge of best practices in diverse school districts.
Currently, Sundermeyer is the Associate Director of Adult Education and Literacy at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC), a position he has held since 2017. In this role, Sundermeyer leads and coordinates adult basic education programming across all campuses, centers, and off-site locations. This position also gave him thorough experience not only in student affairs, but also community partnerships, and data and accountability. He brings innovative ideas, collaborative energy, and extensive experience and expertise to the Ames CSD.
“This dramatic career change also rekindled both my passion and purpose for education,” said Sundermeyer in his cover letter, “and gave me more perspective and hands-on experience with leading wraparound student services and interventions for all ages and backgrounds of those who did not finish high school and for adults wanting to acquire more English skills.”
Sundermeyer holds an Associate in Arts degree from North Iowa Area Community College and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary English Education from the University of Northern Iowa. He also has a Master of Arts in Educational Administration from UNI and an Educational Specialist degree from Drake University. As a District, we are excited to work with Sundermeyer and look forward to his leadership. He officially begins work on July 23, 2024.
